After more than a decade of work and $3.5 billion, engineers have completed the world’s most powerful laser, capable of simulating the energy force of a hydrogen bomb and the sun itself.

The federal Energy Department will announce Tuesday that it has officially certified the National Ignition Facility at the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory in California, clearing the way for a series of experiments over the next year that eventually is hoped will mimic the heat and pressure found at the center of the sun.

Protesters in Athens targeted police officers with lasers yesterday as riots sparked by the police killing of a 15-year-old boy continued into a second week.

Although the intensity of protests has tailed off in recent days pockets of violence are still occurring and more rallies have been planned for this week.

Today, around 50 demonstrators hurled eggs at police outside the main Athens court, where a hearing took place for dozens of people arrested during Greece’s worst riots in decades, sparked by the killing of Alexandros Grigoropoulos on December 6.

Protesters, unseen, aim a laser at a riot policeman during clashes in Athens at the weekend

Students, unions and leftist groups have called demonstrations this week against the conservative government, which has a one-seat majority.

They have planned demonstrations on Wednesday and Thursday against education and pension reforms, privatisations and tax rises.

Last week’s protests fed on growing anger over political scandals, high youth unemployment and low wages, and the impact of a global recession on Greece’s e240 billion economy.

‘It was expected this would continue for a second week,’ said Kiki Toudoulidou, a 37-year-old teacher’.

‘If the government was handling the situation in the right way, we wouldn’t have reached this point.’

Prime Minister Costas Karamanlis’s ruling New Democracy party has denounced the riots as the work of a small group of hardcore anarchists, but at their peak early last week thousands of youths ran riot through 10 Greek cities, wrecking hundreds of cars, banks and businesses.

Mr Karamanlis, whose hands-off response to the riots has been criticised by Greek media, travelled to Cyprus today for the funeral of former president Tassos Papadopoulos.

A laser light pointer is aimed at an officer standing in front of a burning petrol bomb outside Athens’ Polytechnic yesterday

An opinion poll published yesterday by Kathimerini newspaper put disapproval of the government at 68 per cent, with 60 per cent of those polled saying the riots were a social uprising rather than an outburst by an isolated fringe of violent protesters.

Around 565 shops were damaged in Athens, causing more than e200 million of damage and ruining the Christmas shopping period.

Central Athens was quiet today as many shoppers stayed away.

‘There is no business. People are disappointed and angry,’ said Dimitra, 61, a shopowner who declined to give her second name.

‘The protests will continue. They only needed an excuse.’

The policeman charged with killing Grigoropoulos has been jailed along with a colleague pending trial, while more than 400 protesters have been detained during the unrest, but most of them have been subsequently released without charge.

A parliamentary committee was today due to unveil the findings of its inquiry into a government land swap with an Orthodox monastery which an initial prosecutor’s report suggested had cost the taxpayer more than e100 million.

Greece was ranked as the most corrupt country in the euro zone by the Berlin-based Transparency International watchdog in its latest global survey of corruption perceptions.

To ILDA Members and interested laserists:

I am writing to let you know of a new website, www.LaserPointerSafety.com. ILDA has developed this website to help improve the safety and image of the “recreational” laser industry.

While ILDA is not directly involved with laser pointers, bad press for laser pointers is not good for laser shows. ILDA wants to significantly reduce the many laser/aircraft incidents (about 1 per day in the U.S.).

Our goal is to have laser pointer manufacturers emphasize safe use – especially “keep away from airplanes” – much more than they have done. ILDA will jumpstart this effort. Hopefully, laser pointer manufacturers will take over, form their own association, get involved with regulatory bodies such as SAE G-10T, etc.

To help get this started, ILDA developed www.LaserPointerSafety.com. This website focuses on stopping the behavior that gets laser pointers banned, primarily misuse with aircraft. It is aimed at those who use high-powered laser pointers, but may never have considered the less-obvious hazards such as pointing at aircraft.

The website is brand new as of last Friday. We welcome any comments, suggestions, etc. you might have. We also ask that, if you sell laser pointers or if you run a laser forum, etc. – please link to the site.

I want to thank Chuck Maricle of AixiZ, who has helped tremendously in this effort. If anyone wants to help by designing web ads for the site, or in other ways, please write and let me know.

Transport Canada and police are investigating a complaint that a WestJet pilot was hit in the eye with a green laser beam while his plane was taking off from the Calgary airport, CBC News has learned.

This is at least the fourth incident this year where someone has used a hand-held laser pointer to target a plane leaving from, or arriving at, the Calgary airport.

The WestJet flight had just taken off from Calgary, bound for Kelowna, B.C., on Oct. 3, when a green laser briefly lit up the cockpit, said WestJet official Scott Wilson.

The first officer looked out to see where it was coming from and was hit directly in the eyes.
The crew member did not suffer any permanent damage, which could jeopardize a pilot’s career.
“As soon as they got to [the] destination, we had them off-loaded from the aircraft and report to emergency for a proper ophthalmologic exam,” said Wilson. “And we actually had one more followup when they returned to Calgary a day later.”

Wilson said powerful laser pointers are widely available and safe to use according to their instructions. But he warns that the police take incidents where a plane is being tracked with a laser very seriously, especially when planes are landing or taking off.

“I don’t know if the individuals that are perpetrating such things truly understand the danger of the laser versus it’s kind of fun to point a light at the aircraft. But you know, anything that can cause long-term ill effects to our employees or our guests causes us concern, great concern quite honestly.”

Transport Canada said it has received 73 reports of bright lights being shone into cockpits from the ground since 2005.
David Mackow pleaded guilty earlier this year to breaching the Aeronautics Act after an Air Canada Jazz pilot was distracted by a green laser beam while landing in Calgary on Oct. 15, 2007. The laser beam came from an apartment in the city’s downtown core.

The pilot reported the incident and Calgary police dispatched its HAWCS helicopter to investigate. Mackow, a forklift operator, then pointed the green beam into the helicopter.

Mackow told police he was “just having some fun,” but was fined $1,000. Court records show that he later expressed remorse for his actions.
